WORK IN PROGRESS / PHARE / ARLES

 November, 2020

I have the use of a wonderful space for the next few months that once was a bakery. It has tiled floors and high ceilings with old wooden beams. I wanted to host a series of small events, but in seeing that we are once again resorting to confinement, small social gatherings will not be possible. I can still work in the space to experiment with some of the ideas I've been tossing around in my head, however. Like this crazy work in progress for example, that is entitled "Phare" (french for "Light House"). I think it needs more lights.

WORK IN PROGRESS / A BOX OF OLD POSTCARDS

 October, 2020

I've had an old box of my wife's great-granfather's postcards sitting around my studio for years now. Many of them are from the turn of the last century, others as late as the 1960's. I've been poking holes in them with a sewing needle. I like to see the light shining through.  For me, they reference one of my favorite novels, "The Sheltering Sky" by Paul Bowles.

GROUP SHOW / RIEN N'AURA EU LIEU / ARLES

 September, 2020

The idea for this show, "Rien n'aura eu lieu," was conceived during confinement by three curators, Margaux Bonopera, Gregoire d'Ablon and Fabien Vallos. The result was a suprising mish-mash of mostly conceptual works by more than 40 artists. I exhibited a disc of Sonic Braille that parasited the space with low looping frequencies.

FRANCE CULTURE / L' ART EST LA MATIÈRE / JEAN DE LOISY

 February, 2020

Honored to have Sonic Braille showcased for this episode of "L'Art est la Matière" by Jean De Loisy. He has a critical regard and has an amazing capacity to put one at ease. Among other cultural players in the city, Melanie Bellue and I both give our two bits on the subject of the future of Arles.

FONDATION VINCENT VAN GOGH / AMANDINE CASADAMONT + REEVE SCHUMACHER : CARTE BLANCHE / ARLES

January 31, 2020

Amandine Cassadamont and I teamed up to create a live sound performance commissioned by the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh in Arles for their exhibition "...Et Labora." Amandine pulled original recordings from the INA on the subject of the worker's struggle and I used Sonic Braille to create a soundscape that reflected the worker's hostile evironments. I'm delighted to have had such an opportunity!

FESTIVAL ON / OLIVIIER LASSON + REEVE SCHUMACHER : IMPROVISATION EN EAU MAJEUR / ARLES

 November, 2019

Festival ON invited Olivier Lasson and me to occupy the Chapelle de la Madeleine in Arles for three days, open to the public. There we made a totem-stack of loud-speakers that screamed our improvisational music. I can't prove it, but I'm convinced that with all our chanting and shenanigans we made it rain one night!

MUSÉE TRANSITOIRE / PARIS

October, 2019

"Echo" made with mooring rope, twine and flourescent lights. Dimensions variable.

An abandoned five-story parking garage in the middle of Paris: an ideal spot for an exhibition. At least that's what Romina Shama and Amandine Cassadamont thought when they curated a whole roster of international artists including Yours Truely for Musée Transitoire's first installment, "I would prefer not to." It was a very dynamic show with an emphasis on sound installation. I installed two works in-situ and performed Sonic Braille for the opening in a new jacket I made for the occasion. There was a nice write-up in Mediapart.

ÉGLISE DE FRÈRES PRÊCHEURS / INSIDE THE BELLY OF A WHALE / ARLES

May, 2019

For one month, the city of Arles provided the Église de Frères Prêcheurs, an immense 14th century Dominican church, for me do an exhibition. Curated by Mélanie Bellue and co-produced by LHOSTE it became much more than an exhibition. It became a testing ground in collaboration and improvisation with numerous artists, musicians, yogis, dancers, writers, trapezists, cyclists and the public alike. Sonic Braille and a corridor of loud speakers resounded thoughout the voluminous space that was punctuated by sculpture, large format works, installations and performances.

RADIO NOVA / SYLVAIN PRUDHOMME + REEVE SCHUMACHER / L'AFFAIRE FURTIF / PARIS

 April, 2018

Live from the studio of Radio Nova, Sylvain Pruhomme reads excerpts from his book, "L'Affaire Furtif," with musical accompaniment of Sonic Braille.
